When choosing a publisher for your research, it is important to consider a range of factors:
Is the publisher a good fit for your academic discipline?
Does the publisher have a thorough peer review process?
How will the publisher support your funder’s and the REF open access requirements?
Will the publisher allow you to retain rights over your work?
Does the university have an Open Access agreement with the publisher?
Be wary of predatory publishers: these are publishers who exploit the Open Access model by charging a fee for publishing without quality control processes such as peer review and editing. Think Check Submit allows you to identify trusted publishers for your research.
Library and Learning Resources now have agreements with several publishers to promote open publishing models and make it easier for university researchers to benefit from Open Access.
Library and Learning Resources are working with publishers to transition to open access publishing models and now participate in several Open Access agreements which cover the cost of Article Processing Charges (APCs) as an alternative to library subscription fees, helping to ensure the latest research is openly accessible.
These agreements allow university researchers to publish Open Access articles in selected journals with participating publishers without any additional cost, or at a reduced rate. Further details of the arrangements with each publisher are outlined below.
Eligibility is usually based on the institution of the corresponding author – i.e. the author who submits the article for publication. If you are collaborating on a journal article and the corresponding author is based outside of UWTSD, we recommend depositing the accepted manuscript in our Research Repository.
These agreements normally cover research articles, review articles and conference papers. Editorials and book reviews are not usually eligible.
To benefit from these agreements, always use your UWTSD email address when submitting your article and corresponding with the publisher.
UWTSD subscribes to the ACM OPEN Journals agreement 2023 – 2025. Under this agreement all research articles and conference proceedings with a corresponding author from the university can be made open access upon publication, with the corresponding author being given the option of selecting a CC-BY licence for article sharing and reuse.
Copies of articles authored by affiliated authors at UWTSD can be deposited into the University’s open repository for open dissemination, even if the author is not the corresponding author. When the article has been published on an open access basis, the deposit should be of the final published version; when the article has been published on a subscription basis, the deposit should be of the final accepted manuscript.

UWTSD participates in the Brill Read and Publish Agreement which allows corresponding authors to publish research and review articles and conference papers in Brill hybrid and fully open access journals without article processing charges.

UWTSD has a ‘read and publish’ agreement with Cambridge University Press which covers Research, Review Articles and Rapid Communications (RRR), Plus Brief Report and Case Reports article types within any hybrid and gold journals from the CUP Complete Journals Collection. Eligibility is based on the affiliation of the corresponding author. To take advantage of this agreement, please ensure that University of Wales Trinity Saint David is selected as your institution and you provide your UWTSD email address when submitting your article. Accepted articles under this agreement will normally be published under a CC-BY licence.

UWTSD participates in the Jisc / Elsevier UK 2022 – 2025 agreement for open access publishing. When publishing research and review articles in eligible Elsevier Core hybrid journals, authors will be able to choose to publish open access at no additional cost to the author. Eligibility is based on the affiliation of the corresponding author. To take advantage of this agreement, please ensure that University of Wales Trinity Saint David is selected as your institution and provide your UWTSD email address when submitting your article. Articles must have an acceptance date between 1.1.2022 and 31.12.2025 to be eligible.

UWTSD has a ‘read and publish’ agreement with Oxford University Press which allows corresponding authors to publish Research and Review articles under open access licences in 400+ journals at no cost to them. Verification of eligibility by Oxford University Press is based on article type and corresponding author affiliation. To take advantage of this agreement, please ensure that University of Wales Trinity Saint David is selected as your institution and you provide your UWTSD email address when submitting your article. Following the peer review and author verification process, accepted articles will be published under an Open Access licence.

UWTSD participates in the Jisc WHEEL Sage Agreement which allows authors to publish open access articles in Sage journals for a discounted rate. This discount is applied automatically when University of Wales Trinity Saint David is selected by the publishing author as their affiliated institution.
UWTSD participates in the Springer Nature Read and Publish Agreement which allows corresponding authors to publish original research and review articles, brief communications and continuing education article in eligible Springer hybrid journals without further article processing charges.

UWTSD has a ‘read and publish’ agreement with Taylor and Francis journals which allows corresponding authors to publish research articles under open access licences in Taylor and Francis Hybrid (Open Select) journals at no additional cost. Verification of eligibility is based on article type and corresponding author affiliation. To take advantage of this agreement, please ensure that University of Wales Trinity Saint David is selected as your institution and provide your UWTSD email address when submitting your article. Following the peer review and author verification process, accepted articles will be published under an Open Access licence.

UWTSD participates in the Jisc Wiley Read and Publish OA 2020-2023 Agreement, which allows authors to publish primary research and review articles in any of Wiley’s OnlineOpen journals with no further open access costs for manuscripts accepted after 2 March 2020. This only applies to original research papers and review articles.

If you are publishing in a subscription (hybrid) journal, log in to Wiley Author Services after receiving confirmation of acceptance, click Select OnlineOpen, choose University of Wales Trinity Saint David as your affiliated institution, and provide details of any funding, if applicable. Once you have done this, select OnlineOpen. UWTSD will be notified of your request and will review.
Please note that where research is unfunded and a university publisher agreement is not available to fund publication directly in an open access journal (gold open access), we recommend submission of your author’s accepted manuscript to the University research repository as an alternative (green open access). This will allow your work to be available open access when the published version is only available through subscription or via a paywall. UWTSD currently has a ‘read only’ agreement with IEEE which does not cover open access publishing. Further information on open access fees can be found here.
DOAJ – Directory of Open Access Journals: an extensive index of diverse open access journals from around the world.
Library and Learning Resources are a supporter member of Open Book Publishers (OBP), an independent UK Open Access publisher in the Humanities and Social Sciences, run by scholars and committed to making high-quality research freely available to readers around the world.
OBP provides permanent and free access to e-books for readers with no Open Access fees (also known as Book Processing Charges or BPCs) for authors.
