The importance of Open Access:
the UWTSD Open Access Policy

Open Access (OA) is the process of making scholarly publications and data freely available and reusable to allow anyone to benefit from research.

Open Access encourages collaboration, transparency, and innovation, by making research accessible to everyone and not just those who can afford to pay.  By openly sharing research, researchers can collaborate more easily and build on each other’s work.  Open Access also increases transparency and accountability as research findings are made openly accessible for wider public scrutiny.  An Open Access culture seeks to remove barriers to the dissemination of research, promote collaboration and innovation, and increase the impact and relevance of research to society.

To encourage Open Access among the academic community and ensure that publicly funded research is freely accessible, the REF, UKRI and many research funders now mandate OA publishing.

UWTSD recognises that scholarly publications are a valuable asset that may be used to communicate research findings and form the basis for new and innovative research. As recipients of public funding, we recognise our obligation to make our research as widely available as possible.  We want to ensure that our research reaches the widest possible audience and are committed to supporting Open Access for the benefit of other researchers and wider society.

As a University researcher, you can make a difference by openly sharing your work.
Act on Acceptance – deposit your final Author’s Accepted Manuscript in our Open Access Repository as soon as possible after you have a journal article, conference paper, monograph or book chapter accepted for publication.
