Getting Started Guides

Get Started

This guide is designed to help you get started with using learning resources and making the most of the services available to support your academic studies.

Before you start, please watch this short video which will show you how to access your library account and the library’s resources and ensure you have completed the Digital Learning checklist to make sure you are set up and ready to carry on. Then scroll down to find out more.

Find your module's essential reading

Your Online Resource Lists provides access to all the items of essential and further reading, viewing, watching or listening that academic staff have selected for your modules.  You can access these via Moodle, by logging into your module page and clicking on the Online Resource Lists icon on the right.

Alternatively you can browse Online Resource Lists by module name or number or by subject.

If you are viewing the list as a Guest user you will need to log into view item availability and reserve items. To do this click on the Guest User icon and select login.  Use your UWTSD email address and password to login

You will also need to locate and familiarise yourself with your Referencing handbook.  The University support four types of referencing: Harvard, MHRA, IEEE and APA.  If you’re not sure which one you should be using then check with your lecturer.

Explore the library's resources

Choose from the most popular books and journals in your subject area or use the library catalogue to conduct your own searches.

The library catalogue is like Google Scholar but without the paywalls!

Advanced Search

Find out what’s popular in history, click on a cover image to find the title in the library catalogue.

Browse new history print and ebooks that have recently been ordered by the library.  Click on a book cover to find it within the library catalogue and to place a hold on the print copy if it’s not yet available.

Use BrowZine to explore and locate journals within our ejournal collection.

Develop your skills

We provide a wide range of tools to support you throughout your studies in developing your academic and information skills as well as your digital skills. Additionally, all students have a Librarian and a Digital Skills Advisor allocated to their subject of study or area of work.

If you need some help, advice or a friendly bit of encouragement, you can book an appointment with a member of our team at a time to suit you.

Academic and Information Skills

These are the core skills that help you to find, use and access the appropriate material for your studies.  They also help develop your critical thinking and organisational skills and your referencing skills.  We have developed a series of self-directed units as part of our InfoSkills programme, to help support you in developing these skills at your own pace.

Digital Skills

Hopefully, you will have already completed the Digital Skills discovery tool for new students and obtained your personalised digital skills report.  Once you have this, use the resource finder tool in the DigiCentre to support you in upskilling by using our resource finder to find training resource or following our self-directed units on Moodle to gain digital badges.
